In Legacy the diversity of horse tones and shades mirrors the rich tapestry of real-life equine beauty. Each base color (black, bay, and chestnut) in the game boasts three tones, with most dilutions offering two unique tones, such as cream, dun, and more.

But here’s where it gets even more exciting – within almost every tone, you’ll discover a breathtaking array of up to eight distinct shades. Whether you’re envisioning a sleek ebony black, a warm and classic bay, or the fiery glow of chestnut, the possibilities are as limitless as your imagination. (Except for cremello or perlino, which boast a single but stunning tone and shade!)

In Legacy, the magic lies in the genes. Six carefully orchestrated genes control these tones and shades, resulting in an astonishing 1,300+ possible base colors within the game, excluding gray. Gray will have its spotlight in a later post, so stay tuned!

With tones and shades being completely genetic, this means you can breed for whichever tone or shade suits your fancy. Love a dark, rich mahogany bay, you can breed for that. Prefer a light, buttermilk buckskin? That’s breedable too!
