We know many of you have been wondering about the status of Legacy and when you’ll be able to play V2. Here’s a comprehensive update on where we are and what’s happening behind the scenes.
The Temporary, Closed Beta
We’re currently running a closed, Patreon-only beta for V2, which launched around August of last year. This isn’t a public release yet—it’s a dedicated testing period designed to pressure test the new code, evaluate new and updated features, and work through as many bugs as possible before we open the doors to everyone.
Our goal is to create the most stable possible version of the core features before the full public relaunch. We want your first experience with V2 to be as smooth and enjoyable as possible.
Why Patreon-Only?
We chose to give Patreon members beta access for two reasons. First, we wanted to say thank you for their financial support of the game’s development. Second, having a smaller player base during the more serious bug fixing helps both of us to not to get overwhelmed. This was not a cash grab—both of us developers have taken zero payouts from the game since the original launch. Every dollar goes back into supporting and improving Legacy. Not to mention, the game was more profitable when we were open to everyone and had a functional store.
Timeline to Open Alpha
We expect the closed beta to continue for roughly two to three additional months, though we can’t provide a firm end date at this time. We’ll keep you updated as we get closer to a public launch.
Development Reality
Both of us are working on Legacy as a part-time passion project. We both have full-time professional jobs and personal obligations to family and other responsibilities that have to come first. That said, we do our best to prioritize the game as much as possible. Between the two of us, we easily spend 20-40 hours per week working on Legacy on average.
Why We’ve Been Quiet
We know we’ve been publicly quiet about development progress during the closed beta. There are a few reasons for this:
First, we’re both stretched fairly thin by the amount of work required just to maintain the beta and continue developing the game. We’ve chosen to let marketing drop because it’s currently the least critical task. Second—and more importantly—we didn’t feel comfortable pushing the game publicly during a paid access period. It didn’t seem right to market something most people couldn’t access yet.
What’s Changed In Game
That said, we do plan to start publishing information about the updated and new features that will be in V2 when we reopen to the public. These updates will be published right here on the blog, so keep an eye out—we have a lot of exciting information to share.
Some of the features we’ve been working on include:
- A complete revamp of the show system
- Updates to the jobs system
- Twin and new broodmare management features
- New phenotypes
- And many more improvements
Development Progress
Here’s where we stand on our major development goals before open alpha:
Goal 1: Stable Rollovers
Our first priority was ensuring rollovers were optimized and running consistently without major issues. We’ve hit that milestone and have remained stable over the past few weeks.
Goal 2: Major Features Implementation
We wanted to implement all core features and feature updates with minimal bugs. We’re about 80% of the way there.
Goal 3: Overall Stability
Our final goal is for the game to be as stable as possible, with minimal bug reports coming in at the time of public alpha launch. We still have progress to make here, but we feel great about how things are going.
Stay Tuned
We’re incredibly grateful for your patience and support as we work to make V2 the best it can be. More updates are coming soon—we can’t wait to share what we’ve been building.
